Categories: Personalities , Calendar

The most powerful ruler in his time was Ota I the Great. He was Duke of Saxony, King of East Francia and the first Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. His victory at the Battle of Lech marked the end of the period of Hungarian invasions of Europe. Ota

the Great was born on 23 November 912 in Wallhausen. His father was Henry I the Avian, who is said to be the founder of the Ottonian dynasty of kings and emperors of the Holy Roman Empire. This was then just restored by his son Ota.

He was crowned King of East Francia in early August 936 in the Cathedral of Our Lady of Tachy. He ruled a federation of grand duchies (Saxony, Bavaria, Franconia, Thuringia and Swabia). The heads of the houses of the dukes were typically descendants of the commanders of the imperial frontier armies, who cherished loyalty to the central authority and were willing to vote for more than the first among equals. Ota the Great defeated the Hungarians on the Field of Lesbos in 995 and was crowned emperor for his help to the pope.

This title, apart from its symbolism and considerable prestige, essentially guaranteed only the annexation of northern Italy to the empire. The conflict between church and state, as a significant cleavage typical of the Western European region, escalated into a dispute over the investiture of bishops and permanently prevented the linking of the spiritual and the secular, as well as the legacy of Catholic Rome and the progressively more important region of the Atlantic coast and the northern Baltic.

Otto's reign was also marked by the rebellion of a number of monarchs. To prevent such situations, he appointed members of his family to head the duchies. The discovery of a silver vein in the Saxon town of Rammelsberg in 938 helped to finance all his activities.

He chose Magdeburg as his seat, where he founded the monastery of St. Moritz in 973 and where he was buried. Throughout his reign he wanted to rule over the Church. In 955, he defeated the Hungarians in a battle on the Lech River, in which Czech warriors led by Boleslaus I also took part. On August 10, 955, in the fields from Augspurk to the southwest around the Lech River, a battle, both proper and decisive, was fought, and one of the greatestand bloodiest of the whole Middle Ages," wrote František Palacký in his History of the Czech Nation in Bohemia and Moravia according to the original ...

This battle marked the end of the period of Hungarian raids into Europe. In the same year, Ota won the Battle of Regnitz over the Slavs of the Elbe region. When Ota managed to make peace with the Byzantine Empire, he brought the entire imperial family back to Germany in 972. Ota became the most powerful man in Europe. He died on May 7, 973 at the age of sixty after falling ill with fever.
