The collection of more than 1,700 Anglo-Saxon artefacts dating from the 6th to 7th centuries AD was acquired by the Kent Archaeological Society just before it managed to be sold at public auction last Friday. All the items were found in an Anglo-Saxon burial ground near Ramsgate in Kent.

Detectorist finds unique golden sword head from the 8th century

An extremely rare, 1,300-year-old gold head decorated with intricate patterns and garnets was found by a hobby prospector with a metal detector. It has now been acquired by the National Museums of Scotland. It is the first and only one of its kind ever found in Scotland. It's worth up to a million crowns.

500-year-old pendant found by metal detector declared a treasure

The circular reliquary pendant was found in May near Stroud in Gloucestershire by detectorist David Mallows of the Wyvern History and Detection Club in Harescombe. At an inquest in Gloucester last Thursday, the coroner was told it dated between 1400 and 1540, contained precious metals and met the requirements of a treasure.

Gold coins found under the floor sold for a staggering amount

More than 260 coins were discovered by a couple in 2019 while renovating the kitchen of an old house in Ellerby, East Yorkshire. They were lying in a container between a concrete slab and 18th-century floorboards. A preliminary estimate of their price was around £200,000. A unique, beautifully crafted 4,000-year-old necklace was discovered during an archaeological dig on the Isle of Man in 2019. The jewellery was made up of 122 black amber beads in seven rows above each other. It has now been declared a treasure and will be displayed for the public to see.

The unassuming tin cigar box held a real treasure. It was at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland. One of the staff here discovered wood from the pyramid of Khufu in Egypt inside the box. Experts say the artefact is of incalculable value.
