A guardian angel is a religious term referring to a supernatural, disembodied being (an angel) who is meant to protect an individual. Within the Catholic Church, guardian angels are believed in, although they are not the content center of the faith. The existence of a guardian angel is affirmed theologically by Matthew (18:10): 'See that you do not oppress any of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always behold the face of my Father who is in heaven" (King James Version).

From this it is inferred that every man has one such guardian angel. The liturgical worship of guardian angels became widespread in the 15th and 16th centuries along with the worship of the Archangel Michael. The Archangel is considered to be an angel protecting the Church, the sick, merchants, sailors and soldiers. In 1670, Pope Clement X instituted the feast of the guardian angel for the entire Church on October 2.
