The first copper sickles had the form of plates embedded in a wooden handle.

From the Middle Ages and especially the Late Bronze Age, bronze sickles with an arcuate blade have been produced, and they can also be S-shaped. Older forms of sickle are knife-shaped and have a mandrel for attaching the handle. The shape develops over time, the younger types have a rib on the obverse along a curved back, which extends to the tang. The arched shape of the sickle has survived to this day.
