Silver coins minted during the reign of the emperors Julius Caesar and Augustus were discovered by archaeologists in the Hradec Králové region. They were placed in the ground in a textile or leather bag. A total of 103 coins were probably hidden by an inhabitant of a Germanic settlement.

The bag was no longer preserved, it disintegrated over time. The archaeologists were delighted by the discovery, as the coins are of incalculable value, according to experts. In total, they discovered 103 coins that were minted more than 2,000 years ago. It is believed that they were hidden by someone from a Germanic settlement that was located in the area in the past.

"The soldier had an annual salary of about 150 denarii, so the 103 coins represent quite an interesting sum," said archaeologist Pavel Horník from the Museum of East Bohemia in Hradec Králové.

But the treasure was more extensive. It also contained other artefacts such as bronze pins and objects from the Latin and Roman periods, including one Celtic coin.

According to Miroslav Novák, head of the social science department at the Museum of East Bohemia in Hradec Králové, this discovery can be described as the find of the century. It is mainly the extent of the Roman coins found.

"The coins tell us about the state of the economic system at that time. They bear marks that were struck into the coins and, for example, can identify the treasury of a military commander. But we have to clean them first and then we may know that they were the spoils of a particular unit within the Roman Empire that was on our territory," Novák said.

One Roman coin weighed over three grams. It was similar in size to a fifty. A depot containing hundreds of Czech denarius coins from the turn of the 10th and 11th centuries was also found in the neighbouring Pardubice region in 2014. The coins were acquired by the museum and could be exhibited in autumn

"One sees the beauty, one sees the beautiful coins. At the same time, one thinks about where the coins are from, how they got here and looks for the beautifularchaeologist Tomáš Bek said about the discovery in the Hradec Králové region.
