17 Mar 2016 They were repairing pipes, found 600 kilos of treasure

The incredible treasure was discovered six years ago by workers in Seville while repairing a water pipe. They found 600 kilograms of coins in 19 amphorae. The plates bore the likenesses of Maximian and Constantine.

The coins date from between the 3rd and 4th centuries AD. They were found in nineteen Roman amphorae. Experts believe they were probably intended as payment for soldiers or civil servants.

Ana Navarro, director of Seville's archaeological museum, commented on the find. "It is clear that these were new coins that were minted. It is an exceptional collection. We know of only a few of these around the world," Navarro said.

Officials halted work on the water pipe so archaeologists could begin research. The amphorae contained bronze and silver coins. "The historical value of the depot is incalculable, otherwise we are probably talking about several million euros," Navarro further revealed.

Yet a year ago - in 2015 - a Swiss farmer discovered a treasure trove of more than four thousand bronze and silver coins in his garden, weighing a total of fifteen kilograms. Most of the coins were bronze, but a few contained silver.

How the coins were worth in their time cannot be determined. At that time, Rome was facing a huge inflation. The country was very unstable, with one emperor after another on the throne. Diocletian even froze prices by edict in 301.

A similar finding was reported by the Swiss media. A farmer there found coins in a cherry orchard near the town of Eiken. He saw something glittering on the surface of a bush. He behaved himself and called in the archaeologists. They helped dig up all the coins, which they estimated to be 1,700 years old and dated from the reigns of Emperor Aurelian (270-275) and Maximian (286-305).

"The treasure exceeded all our expectations. The site where the coins were found had never been excavated or built on. Therefore, the coins had never been found before and have been preserved in very good condition," commented archaeologist Gerg Matter.
