The beautiful cup was discovered by archaeologists five years ago in Veselá Street in Brno. It probably had a decorative and representative function. Similar specimens from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries come from Prague or Plzeň.
Archaeologists ranked the cup among the best and most beautiful objects they found in Veselá Street. It was nineteen centimetres high. The archaeologists discovered only fragments, which they managed to piece together.
Lenka Sedláčková commented on the discovery on behalf of the Brno archaeological society Archaia. The body of the cup originally had a rectangular ear. The rim in the shape of a circle has a distinctive fluted rim decorated with small incisions," the archaeologist revealed.
The cup probably included a lid. The archaeologists infer from the lack of a sitter. According to the workmanship, the cup probably dates from the second half of the fifteenth century to the early sixteenth century.
'Below the rim and above the base of the jar is a decorative band consisting of a vertical wave pattern. The body of the cup is covered with small stakes in the shape of a coat of arms, which form an irregular motif of friendly triangles," Sedláčková further revealed.
The object found in Brno is similar to those found in the past by archaeologists in Pilsen or Prague. It dates back to the fifteenth or early sixteenth century. They were probably made to order for special occasions. It seems to have had a decorative and representative function.
"Without a doubt, we can include these cups in the circle of richly decorated cups of the 15th century, whose prominent representatives in our environment are, for example, cups with diamond decoration. How far these cups can be compared with cups from Sezimovo Ústí or Kozí Hrádek, for example, or perhaps even with the stoneware of the so-called Falke group, is questionable," Sedláčková said about the discovery.
In the past, archaeologists have discovered, for example, the remains of the so-called Loštice cup. This is a famous pottery that was produced in Loštice in the Middle Ages. Archaeologists discovered one such specimen five years ago in Šumperk.
