Categories: Invitations

Wednesday, February 25 from 17:00

We invite all history seekers, archaeologists and lovers of medieval castles to an extremely interesting lecture on the topic of the extinct Pustiměř (Melice) Castle.

The lecturers will be doc. PhDr. Rudolf Procházka, CSc. and Mgr. Petr Žákovský, Ph.D. from Archaeological Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences, Brnowho are among the leading experts in medieval archaeology.

The Short Life of the Great Castle

Melice Castle existed for just under a century. Its short but intense history was dramatically ended by the Hussite wars. Although today its modest terrain remains look inconspicuous, archaeological research and written sources show that it was one of the most magnificent and lavishly equipped castles of its time in Moravia and Bohemia.

During the lecture you will learn for example:

  • what written sources have been preserved for the castle

  • what archaeological research has uncovered

  • what everyday life was like in the castle

  • what unique finds were discovered

  • why and under what circumstances the castle disappeared

Part of the Mysterious Places project

The lecture is an accompanying event to the exhibition Melice - the story of the castle, the story of the landscape, which was created as part of the Mysterious Places project. Its aim is to present unique archaeological findings from the collections of the museums of the South Moravian Region and to make the public aware of the significance of lesser-known but historically extremely interesting sites.
