The largest Roman penis ever found in Córdoba

A bas-relief of a phallus over half a metre long has been discovered on the wall of a massive Roman building in Nueva Carteya, Spain. The symbol, believed by the Romans to ward off evil curses and bring good luck, was carved into the front profile of the limestone stone at the base of the tower-like structure. It is one of the largest pyjamas ever discovered in the Roman world, possibly the largest ever, according to archaeologists.

Excavations of the site at El Higuerón first began between 1966 and 1968, when a fortified Iberian city from the 5th century BC was found. The original settlement was destroyed by the Romans after the defeat of Carthage - they conquered the area towards the end of the Second Punic War in 206 BC. On the Iberian ruins they built, among other things, a tall tower-like structure with a floor plan of 20 x 17 m.

The building was abandoned by the Romans of the Flavian dynasty in the first century AD. Later, it was reconstructed by the Moors, who removed some parts of the building, especially the underground storerooms. Instead, they strengthened weak points such as the access points. When the Moors were expelled by the Christians in the 13th century, the building was forgotten until archaeologists rediscovered it in the 1960s.

So far, the latest excavations began this August. The primary objective was to uncover the tower building and clear the perimeter wall, which is the oldest remnant of the Iberian city. Archaeologists describe the building as a "monumental Roman structure" with perimeter walls made of limestone blocks 1.8 metres thick.

Among other things, underground stores of agricultural products have been discovered here, along with various building materials such as remnants of stucco, Roman concrete (opus caementicium), tiles and storage containers with lids. This year, in addition to cleaning the perimeter wall, archaeologists are focusing on excavating an access point through one of the facadesd to the tower, "one of the most massive elements of the site," according to the director of the Nueva Carteya Historical Museum, Andrés Roldán.

After three weeks of work, the foundations of the Iberian-era structure have been reached. Archaeologists also uncovered a limestone floor inside the tower, a paved courtyard just outside the tower and evidence of repeatedmodifications to the building's access entrance - from the original Roman door to the medieval door that still survives today.

Although the site has been known since its discovery in the 1960s, until now the ruins of the walls amidst the hills with olive trees have not attracted much attention. Now, after the discovery of the giant penis, the interest of the professional and general public has grown. Including the dubious interests of some greedy people. The local police and civil guards have to protect the site because, especially at night, the ruins attract thieves.

The municipality of Nueva Carteya bought the land to ensure the long-term protection of the valuable archaeological site. The ultimate goal is to create an open-air archaeopark open to the public, accompanied by a museum in which local artefacts will be displayed. Including a record-sized Roman penis.

To je macek... 😁

Jestli z toho bude ten veřejně přístupný archeopark, tak jim tam časem zůstane jen ošoupanej kámen. :-D
