About us

So I got the party task, I should introduce our association, which operates in the north of Bohemia. My wife and I have always had an adventurous spirit, so it was only a matter of time before we sniffed the detectors. It happened almost ten years ago. We entered the world of detectors, like many others, through the legendary Garrett Ace 250.

Years went by and we changed detectors according to what was new on the market. I just had to go through everything. And so the detectors that I said I wouldn't pay for the money landed at our home. Time passed and we met Zipsy (for those who don't know him, he's a local Treasure Hunter salesman) and later he became our very good friend. Thanks to him, we began to get to know people with the same disabilities here in the North. Among them was Míša Salak (Sallyk). It was then that we began to flirt with the establishment of the association, when learning about the history of our surroundings through finds hidden in the country and putting them into historical contexts became our main idea. Michal took over all the paperwork and furnishing around the founding of the association and it must be added that he is really honored. He arranged and organized everything. We founded the North Association. Over time, we began to address museums and individual archaeologists.

This resulted in close cooperation with the Ústí nad Labem and Teplice museums. We are currently establishing cooperation with the Archeo LP 2010 association. During this time, various events and surveys have taken place. It is necessary to add that the individual members also approached other archaeologists independently and subsequently further cooperation was established. For all of them, I mention Míra Krejčí's cooperation with the director of the Roudnice Museum, Martin Trefný. We also collaborated on rescue archaeological research in Hrbovice, where my son and I also took overall pictures of the examined area from a drone for presentation purposes. Míra also took part in the research, and it must be added that it was great to touch on a truly ancient history first-hand.

Expression of Measure:
At the end of last summer, our association Severeřany was approached by archaeologists from the Municipal Museum in Ústí nad Labem by Luboš Rypka and Eliška Wiesnerová. We were asked to help with the detector survey of the land on which the investor was going to build. The event took place on an inconspicuous meadow just outside the city and the detector survey itself did not bring any major discovery (the oldest find was probably the tailor M. Theresie), which was a disappointment especially for the local archaeologist. All that was left was to wait for the work to begin and find out what the topsoil was revealing. In agreement with the supervisor Karel Svoboda, we walked through the area with detectors every day in an effort to discover as many metal objects as possible. Unfortunately, the result was again weak, which could be explained mainly by the findings, which could be dated to older periods, when the use of metal tools was not so widespread. More and more objects appeared, which indicated that the place was very densely used by our ancestors, as evidenced by shards, parts of vessels and sometimes bones. When the outlines of the first graves appeared, everything was clear.

Several members of the North also took part in the excavation work, and we continued to keep the detector on alert. It was amazing to see more and more objects explored every day, to see the pottery and tools found, which our ancestors used several thousand years ago. I consider the work on several skeletal graves to be the pinnacle of participation in rescue research. I found myself, so to speak, in the face of a prehistoric hunter - my ancient ancestor. Respectively and very carefully, I tried my best to clean up his remains, and I wondered how hard life must have been then. The reward for our efforts was praise from experts from the ranks of archaeologists. Once again, we were convinced of the importance of cooperation with archaeologists and that if both parties want, everything works great. I can say for myself: I'm glad I could be there.

A few lines from Sallyk to the end:
Everything important has already been said. In the beginning, there were only three of us, when we gradually expanded our ranks, and now we have around thirty permanent and cooperating searchers. You can find our findings in several museums, some were published at the national level, such as the finding of a depot of gold and bronze objects near Libochovan, some of which you could meet on the LP website either in the form of articles or currently in the voting for it finding of 2017, where our association represents the discovery of a gold buckle. Another of our members is involved in uncovering positions of air defense (so-called flak) from the period of World War II in Most, our members participated in the survey of the castle Kalich - in short, we try. In our region, we are trying to change the view of state institutions on seekers as such, so that in their eyes we are not just plunders of the cultural heritage of our ancestors. Time will tell whether we will succeed.

A few words from archaeologist Luboš Rypka for the complete conclusion:
The Museum of the City of Ústí nad Labem has been cooperating with the Severany Association since about 2014. Most often it is about helping individuals before rescue research, detector survey of areas to be built before the start of overburden work, after topsoil cover and also during the research itself. Several members of Hrbovice have recently been part-time in their own excavation work. In addition to detector survey, we also cooperate with some members of the Northman on aerial prospecting (drone imaging) and on surface collections (ceramics collections in fields after plowing, often again in combination with detector survey). Individuals also regularly carry findings from their own prospecting, for some we focus their location in the field and choose the strategy of further research (whether individual or organized).

From time to time, we also organize larger exploratory events with the entire association in selected localities. These are most often localities where no research has been carried out yet, but we expect findings here, or from where we have only older findings without a more precise location, or where only smaller research has been carried out in the past. With the help of detector research (often in combination with surface collections and aerial photography) we try to determine the extent of the inhabited area and its archaeological potential for possible further research. In addition to exploring the areas of presumed prehistoric settlements, we also conduct a gradual survey of selected parts of the complex of long-distance routes, the so-called Chlumecká Trail, from where we already have a very interesting collection of finds from the Stone Age to the High Middle Ages. Unfortunately, due to other field work (supervision during construction activities), there are not as many larger exploratory events as we would like within a year, but we have already done a lot of work together. In the coming years, hopefully the cooperation that has begun will hopefully continue. If a museum archaeologist wants to find out as much information as possible about the settlement of an area in his region, he cannot do without the help of reliable volunteers.
