Das Bataillon wurde am 7. September 1939 in der Gneisenau-Kaserne in Jauer, Wehrkreis VIII, aufgestellt. Das Infanterie-Ersatz-Bataillon 461 unterstand anfangs der Division 168 und stellte den Ersatz für die 252. Infanterie-Division. Im Jahr 1940 wechselte die Unterstellung vom Bataillon zu der Division 148. Im Dezember 1940 wurde das Bataillon nach Mörchingen in Lothringen, Wehrkreis XII, verlegt. Am 1. Oktober 1942 wurde das Bataillon in Mörchingen in ein Infanterie-Ersatz-Bataillon 461 und ein Reserve-Infanterie-Bataillon 461 geteilt. Das Ersatz-Bataillon unterstand nach der Teilung der Division Metz. Das Reserve-Bataillon unterstand nach der Teilung der 148. Reserve-Division. Beide Bataillone wurden am 7. November 1942 in Grenadier-Ersatz-Bataillon 461 bzw. Reserve-Grenadier-Bataillon 461 umbenannt. Am 7. Dezember 1942 wurde das Ersatz-Bataillon nach Mährisch Schönberg in den Wehrkreis VIII zurück verlegt. Ab diesem 7. Dezember 1942 unterstand das Ersatz-Bataillon der Division 432. Das Reserve-Bataillon unterstand ab April 1943 der 189. Reserve-Division. Im Dezember 1943 verlegte das Reserve-Bataillon nach Montlucon. Das Ersatz-Bataillon wurde am 14. Juni 1944 aufgelöst. Das Reserve-Bataillon wurde im August 1944 bei Lanle, nordwestlich von Marseille, gefangen genommen.
