Stolen valuable Darwin notebooks were anonymously returned in a pink gift bag

A pink gift bag was recently found on the floor of a public area of Cambridge University Library. Inside was a custom-made archive box containing 2 notebooks protected by food-grade foil. It was soon discovered that these were Charles Darwin's notebooks stolen over 20 years ago. Inside was a printed message: Happy Easter.

The notebooks have been carefully examined and are fortunately in excellent condition. None of the pages are missing or damaged. The notebooks were last seen in the autumn of 2000, when they were briefly removed from Cambridge's Special Collections Strong Rooms (the University's sheltered library) to be photographed for the Library's digital collection. However, there is no record of the return. A follow-up check in January 2001 found that the notebooks were no longer in their original location...

Despite the priceless historical value of the notebooks, one of which contains Darwin's iconic 1837 drawing for science, The Tree of Life, surprisingly no massive search was launched. The Darwin archives at Cambridge University Library are huge, by far the largest Darwin collection in the world, so staff figured they had been moved within the library and would be found sooner or later.

However, searches over the years have not yielded results and so in 2020 the library launched a comprehensive targeted search of its archives and holdings. This process was expected to take years. In the meantime, the university officially reported the missing notebooks to local and international authorities as stolen and launched a public appeal for the notebooks to be returned. The appeal was shared worldwide, generated thousands of media reactions and articles, and reached hundreds of thousands of people through social media. It clearly worked. The notebooks have been returned and will now be guarded much more closely.

"The building has been significantly transformed since the notebooks were reported missing. The last 20 years have seen the installation of new high security safes, the building of a new dedicated reading room and a whole host of other security measures. These include CCTV, card and pin access to secure areas, a dedicated security team of security guards and a review of all security protocols for the nextwalk-ins to minimise all possible future risks as far as humanly possible," described the new security situation to Cambridge University Librarian Dr. Jessica Gardner.

Officers are continuing to investigate the theft and now the circumstances surrounding the return of the notebooks. The notebooks will be on public display this summer at a Cambridge University Library exhibition dedicated to Darwin's extensive correspondence of 15,000 letters written over his lifetime.

:-) :-)
