Waffen-SS units in Mlada Boleslav...

first of all, I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Peter Neubert and I was born on February 1, 1928 in Pirna near Drazdan. I would like to tell you a bit more about the Waffen-SS units in the Central Bohemian town of Mladá Boleslav, specifically in the barracks of Žižkov.

I was born in Pirna, Saxony, near the industrial town of Drazdan in 1928. My mother was German and came from Bavaria and my father from the Czech town of Venice nad Jizerou. My father went to Germany in 1926 to work in Saxony, where he wooed my mother, who worked in the Daimler plant. My father was killed in 1944 at Narva and my mother was left alone with me, by which time I had already joined the Hitler Youth, in which I spent a total of 4 years of my life.

In September 1944 I was called up to the Waffen-SS,where I underwent training near the town of Gleichenberg in Austria. In January 1944 I was assigned to the 80th Volunteer Grenadier Regiment ss Polizei Regiment Brüxen,which was part of the ss 31st Freiwilligen Grenadier Division,,Böhmen und Mähren", together with 500 other soldiers. Our main commander in this gloomy time was ss-brigadeführer Gustav Lombard. Our station became Mimoň, where we practiced fighting against partisans and soviets in the military area of the former Czechoslovak army.

Since our regiment was a police regiment, it was not immediately sent into battle, just as almost the entire 31st SS Division was sent to the Mad'ar-Austrian border. At the beginning of March, our regiment is moved to the premises of the Žižkov barracks in Mlada Boleslav,where the regiment of the 4th ss polizei division was concentrated together with the Czech government troops. Until May 4 we performed orderly service,when we were involved in a total of 5 times in the fight against Soviet partisans in the vicinity of the town of Mnichovo Hradiště on the top of Mužský.2.On May 2, about 50 men were detached from our regiment, a guard unit of the damage factories, who were sent to the military area of Benesov to supplement the battle group of SS Wallenstein, which had the strength of a division. At this time I was promoted to ss-untersturmführer and commanded one of our units,which fought a large group of Soviet-Czech partisans at Ledec on 5-6 May. We lost one truck and 6 men,there were over 20 dead on the enemy side.

On May 7, things started to happen in Mlada Boleslav as well. An insurrection broke out, which we managed to suppress partially without any major clashes, with the exception of Kosmonosy. On the 8th of May, the 20th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS "Estonia", commanded by a tough guy named Maack, arrived in Mladá Boleslav. The division was divided into large columns,in which there was still a considerable amount of military equipment,among other things, two Panther tanks with the designation of the division Wiking. Together with the 20th SS Division we joined up and on May 9th around 13:00h we started west towards Plzen. Our large column was joined at Melnik by a 30-strong group of Czechs dressed in camouflage SS clothing and one NSA vehicle. After Melnik our division encountered a column of Soviets. After a short fight (our two Panthers knocked out 5 t-34/85) and with a loss of about 40 dead, we surrendered with a force of almost 900 men and vehicles. I spent 5 years in the camp, in 1951 I was home. I moved with my mother to Bohemia to my father's house in Venice nad Jizerou,where I lived until 1965. Now I live in the Giant Mountains.
