Farmer discovers 1,000-year-old rare Viking sword type Ulfberht

While cultivating a field that had not been ploughed for many years on a family farm in Suldal in south-western Norway, local farmer Øyvind Tveitane Lovra and his son discovered a rare Viking sword. Lovra initially thought it was part of an old piece of farming equipment, but upon closer examination he recognised the torso of a Viking weapon in the object. Only 170 swords of this type have been discovered in the whole of Europe.

The Mayor's hoard of silver thalers and groschen worth millions

Archaeologists from the Saxony-Anhalt State Office for Conservation and Archaeology have announced the discovery of a hoard of silver coins from the 17th century. They were found by construction workers during the renovation of a historic farmhouse in Wettin. The coins are mainly thalers and pennies of several European countries, most of them in very good condition.

During the mass detector event, 60-year-old John Belgrove somewhat distanced himself from the others. He noticed a nearby hill from which he wanted to look around and rejoin the group. As he climbed up, he happened to notice a strong signal. Once he had dug it out he couldn't believe his eyes.

It has to be said that the April round of the most beautiful find of the month is 99.99% decided by the kind of margin I'd expect to find a big lump of gold, not an ornate bronze knife. But thanks to that, we can start qualifying for May today, and since there were a lot of finds in May, there is a lot to choose from.

Millionth treasure in Kutnohorsk: early medieval coins one of the biggest finds of the last decade

An exceptional treasure of early medieval denarii from the turn of the 11th and 12th centuries was discovered in the Kutná Hora region. The first coins were found by a woman walking in a field. Archaeologists were called in and used metal detectors to find more. In total, more than 2,150 coins were discovered, probably minted in the Prague mint from imported silver...
