Přeska After the First World War, the German army was reduced to the bare minimum, capable only of assisting the internal security of the state. The newly formed armed forces were called the Reichswehr. The armed forces were apolitical, but many members were greatly dissatisfied with the conditions in Germany after the lost war. They hoped that the restrictions imposed by the Versailles Peace Treaty could be circumvented or reduced.

Perhaps this is why the army remained inactive after the NSDAP coup and why many members of the Reichswehr hoped that with Hitler a new era would begin for the German army. They were not wrong about that. The period for which the German Army can be described as the Reichswehr can be delimited by the years 1919 to 1935.
