April 7, 2008 Search for the tomb of the Rosenbergs

Categories: Finds and rescue research in the Czech Republic , Calendar

Thirteen years ago, archaeologists undertook important research when examining the underground in the Cistercian monastery church in Vyšší Brod in the Český Krumlov region. They found out if the Rosenberg tomb was really there. And they really found her.

They used a gentle method to document a space that is shrouded in various legends. According to them, the tomb of at least ten generations of the Rosenbergs was supposed to be located there. At that time, experts measured the space in the interior of the church, the chapter hall and the cloister of the monastery using georadar and thermometry.

They evaluated the findings for several months and returned to the site in the summer. They identified places where they had drilled a mini-camera to look into the tomb. It was the very first survey in the history of the local monastery. According to old sources, it was basically one big burial ground. It was built by the Rosenbergs, who were an old aristocratic family.

According to one legend, they were buried in golden chairs placed at a round table. But archaeologist Zuzana Thomová said at the time that this would not be true. "In 1902, the floor was broken here, and according to records from that time, the tomb of the coffin hides with the remains. But what the reality is, we will soon find out, "said the archaeologist at the time.

There was even a superstition that there was a Nazi treasure hidden in the cemetery. Archaeologists did not find it, but they could declare that there is indeed a tomb of the Rosenbergs in Vyšší Brod. In the basement near the altar of the Vyšší Brod monastery church are the remains of the famous Petr Vok, who in the religiously sensitive Czech pre-White Mountain environment was one of the leading representatives of the Protestant majority.

Using a mini-camera, archaeologists discovered that there were three coffins in the underground: two pewter and one wooden. On one of the tin coffins it is possible to read not only the name of Petr Vok, but also: "

"All the findings lead us to interpret that the original Rosenberg tomb was significantly deeper than today and that it measured at least 2.70 meters in depth. After filling the tomb of the funeral, the space was introduced with a thick backfill about a meter thick and thus searched. Other members of the powerful aristocratic family could thus continue to be buried with their ancestors, "said Jiří Šindelář, head of the research team.
