Categories: Personalities , Calendar

Radecký served five emperors faithfully. He demanded discipline and obedience from his subordinates, but always tried to create the best possible conditions for them. He earned the nickname Father Radetzky.

Jan Josef Václav Radecký was born on November 2, 1766 in a small village near Sedlčany in Třebnice in the castle built by his father. He came from the old Czech family of Radecky of Radec, deriving their name from the Radec fortress near Nový Bydžov. His parents were Petr Eusebius Radecký and Marie Venantia from Lažany.

From his youth he served in the army and due to his extraordinary abilities he advanced rapidly. He became an aide-de-camp to General Laudon. He fought in the Napoleonic wars, and according to his plan, under the command of Karl Philipp Schwarzenberg, succeeded in defeating Napoleon at Leipzig and driving him to Paris.

"From 1809 he was chief of the general staff of the monarchy, builder and commander of the fortress city of Olomouc, and on his seventieth birthday he was appointed field marshal. In 1848, he was again called to the front, where he succeeded in defeating the troops of the Italian revolutionaries," write Milan and Roman Plch in their book Where to Go for Military Monuments.

He supported military education. Although he strictly demanded discipline and compliance with orders from his subordinates, he always tried to create the best possible conditions for them. He earned the nickname Father Radetzky. "He served as a military leader to five emperors and the soldiers called him father," Antonín Ederer and Pavel Augusta note in their book Squares, Markets and Plazas of Old Prague.

Radecký served faithfully to Emperors Joseph II, Leopold II, Franz II, Ferdinand V and Franz Joseph I. Johan Strauss composed the famous Radecký March. His native language was Czech, his official language was of course German. Radetzky died at the age of 92 in Milan and is buried in the military memorial in Heldenburg near Vienna.

"Emperor Franz Joseph I. wished the Marshal to be given an exceptional burial in the Habsburg family burial ground in the Imperial Capuchin Crypt in Vienna, under specialUnder special circumstances, his body was eventually laid to rest in the military memorial at Heldenberg, north-west of Vienna," the Radecký Prague Society recalls on its website.

For years they have been waging a dispute over the return of Radecký's memorial to Malostranské náměstí in Prague, to which the public can contribute through a public account. Every year in November, a meeting is held at the monument to Marshal Josef VáCount Radetzky of Radec in the Lapidarium of the National Museum in Prague at the Exhibition Grounds in Holešovice. This year it will be in a limited form.

Měli by mu vrátit sochu kam patří.
