24.11.2019 For the golden treasure of 210 thousand crowns

Categories: Finds and rescue research in the Czech Republic , Calendar

A reward of almost 210 thousand crowns was awarded to the finder of the golden treasure from Náchod region. While walking his dog, the man discovered nine golden spirals, whose age was estimated by experts at three thousand years. At first he thought he had found a poacher's eye.

The value of the treasure was determined by the region through an expert opinion of the Assay Office. The reward was subsequently approved by the council, without whose approval the money could not have been paid. Specifically, it was just under 210 thousand crowns.

The finder deserved the reward because he behaved in an exemplary manner. He handed over the treasure to the Náchod Museum two years ago in the spring, when he found the golden spirals in the forest. He was walking his dog when he noticed the ground had been scratched by wild pigs. He saw a wire sticking out of the dirt. When he started pulling it out of the dirt, he couldn't believe his eyes.

The exact location of the discovery remained secret. The archaeologists were worried that curious people would start flocking to the site. But they found nothing else at the site. They started exploring almost immediately after the gold coils were found.

Archaeologist Jan Košt'ál from the Náchod Museum told us about the treasure. "These are nine endless spirals weighing 257 grams from the Younger Bronze Age, i.e. from around 1000 to 1300 BC. No ceramics or other objects were found that would help with a closer temporalWe can only rely on analogies," he said of the 3,000-year-old find.

Such spirals are known to historians and archaeologists from the Lusatian culture. They were used as a semi-finished product. Gold was melted down and used, for example, to make jewellery. It could also be traded. The weight of the spirals ranges from 21 to 33 grams. They were made of thin sheet metal which was then rolled into a tube by a craftsman.

"Thanks to the finder, we have managed to preserve a unique historical artifact that is unique in terms of quantity and preservation. He will receive a reward from the region in the amount of the actual value of the gold, as determined by the Assay Office," said Martina Berdychová (East Bohemians), deputy for culture and education.
