Categories: Invitations

Welcome to the first event of this season at the Mušov Visitor Centre - Bráto the Roman Empire and the opening lecture of the IN MEDIAS RES - To the Heart of the Matter lecture series. Within the framework of this cycle we are trying to convey to you the current results of archaeological excavations. The lecture will be given by Mgr. Marek Hladík, Ph.D., Head of the Centre for Slavic and Medieval Archaeology at the Institute of Archaeology of the CAS, Brno, v. v. i. And what can you expect?

One of the consequences of the reorganisation of economic and social relations in Central Europe after the collapse of the Roman Empire was the creation of Great Moravia. Its existence in many ways foreshadowed the fascinating growth of economic activity at the beginning of the second millennium. This led to the emergence of the medieval states (Hungary, Austria, Bohemia), whose geopolitical tradition (painfully transformed in the 19th century) was the basis for the development of the modern world. and the first half of the 20th century), the political map of contemporary Central Europe has been largely drawn.

But what can we tell about Great Moravia on the basis of contemporary archaeological research? What tradition did it grow out of? On what economic and social foundations did it stand? What kept this geopolitical entity going and why did it suddenly disappear at the turn of the 9th and 10th centuries?
And is archaeology even capable of finding answers to such complex questions?

Admission is at the rate of the regular entrance fee to the exhibition.
