My assessment is certainly subjective, as I haven’t taken the prices of the instruments fully into account. Nevertheless, if you’re currently thinking about buying your first smart telescope, this article might at least provide some inspiration.

A young man working a part-time job discovered a treasure worth 220 million crowns

Whilst renovating a house in Dendermonde, Belgium, workers stumbled upon a huge hoard of gold. In the cellar, they discovered gold coins and ingots worth around 9 million euros. The treasure was first spotted by an 18-year-old temporary worker, who initially thought they were ordinary one-euro coins – until gold bars began to fall from the excavation site.

A gold aureus of Emperor Tiberius has been discovered amongst the ruins of a Roman camp

Archaeologists in Windisch, Switzerland, have completed an extensive investigation of the Roman military camp at Vindonissa. They have uncovered part of the oldest fortifications, the barracks of the first legionaries, a field smithy and a wealth of artefacts relating to military and civilian life. Among the finds, a gold coin of Emperor Tiberius and a gemstone depicting the goddess Victoria stand out in particular.

A 3,000-year-old bronze hoard was found near Kojetín using a metal detector

Whilst supervising the modernisation of the Brno–Přerov railway line, archaeologists discovered a collection of bronze artefacts from the Urnfield culture. The worn tools and part of a sword had been deliberately damaged by someone before being buried in what was then a wetland. According to experts, this may have been a ritual offering.

Croatia, June 2026 and beach bums

Every year, José goes on holiday to Croatia with his wife, and he always packs his metal detector. He’s been planning the holiday since the start of the year, and this time we – Pepan, Marťas and Jánošík – tagged along as a group that always goes out together. Searching in the sea was a first for the last three of us, but we didn’t have any trouble with it at all – though I’m getting ahead of myself. And José’s a great bloke too; he sorted out some special T-shirts for us to wear before we set off, for which he deserves a big thank you and a thumbs-up.

A gold ring found in a Thai tomb bears a 2,000-year-old Indian inscription

Bronze drums were found in a rice field. Subsequent excavations uncovered several graves containing rich grave goods – such as gold earrings and jewellery, bronze vessels, pottery and various ornaments. In one of the graves lay two massive gold rings. One was plain, the other a rare signet ring bearing an inscription in the 2,300-year-old Indian Brahmi script.

A Roman coin and pieces of mosaic led metal-detectorist John Hill to the remains of a long-lost building. After 22 long years of waiting, archaeologists have uncovered its true significance: it is a Roman villa with baths and the westernmost floor mosaic in Britain.

Divers have discovered a 3,000-year-old bronze sword near a shipwreck

Whilst surveying a protected underwater site off the Devon coast, two female archaeologists discovered a bronze sword in excellent condition. The site has been systematically investigated for decades, yet it continues to yield new treasures. Other swords, axes and gold jewellery from the Bronze Age have previously been discovered there.

The wreck of a Byzantine ship contained gold ornaments, jewellery, coins and a ring bearing the emperor’s image

Archaeologists off the Croatian island of Mljet are systematically excavating the wreck of a Byzantine ship dating from the turn of the 7th and 8th centuries. Among the ordinary cargo, they have discovered gold coins, gold belt fittings and a gold signet ring bearing the image of the emperor. It appears that someone from the highest echelons of the state or military administration was travelling on board.
