Divers found the Enigma in a fishing net

German divers from the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), searching for discarded fishing nets in the Baltic Sea, came across a surprising thing. From the water they pulled out a rare Enigma cipher machine used by the Nazi army during World War II.

The bodies of two men in Pompeii, apparently a slave and his master

Once again, Pompeii has proven to be an incredible place for research. This is evidenced by the discovery of two male bodies under about two metres of ash. Apparently they were a slave and his servant who were trying to save themselves during the rampage of the Vesus volcano.

At dawn on December 7, 1941, the first wave of Japanese aircraft took off from aircraft carriers 400 miles north of Hawaii. The Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor.

Kramář, Rašín and some others were sentenced to death for treason. A year after them, Masaryk himself was sentenced in absentia. He was granted amnesty in 1917.

Budding detectorist finds unique coin depot from the Viking period

A handful of scattered silver coins were found in a ploughed field near Brobyværk on the Danish island of Fyn by detectorist and amateur historian Claus Gundersen. When he contacted the Museum of the Archipelago and an archaeologist arrived at the site, they found a container with hundreds of silver coins. Much to everyone's surprise, it turned out that there was another vessel lying deeper in the ground. Also filled to the brim with coins, but with the remnants of the cloth in which the coins were placed...
