A prettier find is not always a better find

Among the archaeological finds, metal detectors have been used to discover not only complete artefacts but also their fragments. In rare cases, semi-finished pieces of these objects can also be found. Their occurrence is very important for the study of society and settlement and represents evidence of a specialised craft - metalworking.

Analysis of Bronze Age daggers has shown that they were used for a specific purpose, not just as the non-functional symbols of identity and social status that they were previously thought to be. This is a major scientific breakthrough; the new method allows the analysis of a wide range of copper alloy tools and weapons, wherever they come from.

Why not clean the finds at all costs

There are a large number of finds in the country that bear the remains of organic material or its negatives, preserved in the corrosion products of metals. Alternatively, the archaeological finds are joined together by corrosion products. A great deal of information is lost by cleaning without professional documentation.

14 Mar 2013 Treasure hunter finds Roman lead coffin

The ancient Roman coffin was discovered nine years ago in Leicestershire by a treasure hunter. It was made of lead and experts say it's worth around £200,000. It probably belonged to a wealthy Roman family.

Swedish charity funds save unique Viking treasure

A unique 1,000-year-old Viking treasure trove of European coins and artefacts, including Bavarian and Slavic ones, was almost sold off at private auctions. It was eventually saved by two charitable foundations. It will now be put on public display.

3/13/1938 Statue discovered by the Nazis made of meteorite

In the 1930s, a Nazi expedition discovered a statue carved from a very valuable meteorite. It's believed to be about a thousand years old and has a swastika on its belly. The statue weighs ten kilograms and stands 24 centimetres tall.
