Went looking for Christmas and discovered a Roman gold earring that recategorises previous finds

Fifty-three-year-old detectorist Nick Bateman, from Burston in Norfolk, discovered a gold Roman earring in the shape of a double disc last Christmas Eve. It was declared a treasure last week and will be displayed in a museum. It changes the existing view of similarly made artefacts and places them from the early medieval to the earlier Roman period...

They found the treasure and could have gotten 82 million. Now they're in jail and still have to pay

George Powell and Layton Davies, who covered up the discovery of Viking treasure in Herefordshire four years ago, will have to pay heavily for their greed (and stupidity) once again. They were convicted of theft and concealing the find in 2019, for which they received prison sentences of 10 and 8.5 years respectively. Now a judge has ordered them to pay over £600,000 (about £16.5 million) each within three months or have another five years added to their sentences...

1500 kg of bronze coins half a metre underground

A huge hoard of 1.5-ton bronze coins from the Tang (618-907) and Song (960-1279) dynasties was discovered in the eastern Chinese village of Shuangdun in Jiangsu province. The coins were connected by straw strings and arranged in neat rows.
