A 1,200-year-old hoard of gold jewellery and precious stones

Archaeologists in Saudi Arabia have discovered a collection of more than a hundred pieces of jewellery made of gold, silver and precious stones. The hoard was found inside a ceramic vessel at the Dariyah settlement in the Al-Qassim region. According to experts, it dates from the mid-8th century, during the Abbasid Caliphate.

The ring was discovered in November 2024 by Stuart Jones in a field near the village of Wormington in Gloucestershire. It was his first time searching at that location, and he spent nearly seven hours there with his metal detector that day. As is often the case, the find came right at the end of his search. It has now been sold at auction.

A seemingly ordinary bronze plaque found using a metal detector is rewriting history

Stephen Newbury discovered a small rectangular plate made of a copper alloy whilst using a metal detector near the village of Lynsted in Kent. It later transpired that this was an exceptionally rare die dating from the late 6th or early 7th century. It bears a resemblance to the decorative elements of the famous Sutton Hoo helmet. It is the first of its kind to be found in England.
