A seemingly ordinary bronze plaque found using a metal detector is rewriting history

Stephen Newbury discovered a small rectangular plate made of a copper alloy whilst using a metal detector near the village of Lynsted in Kent. It later transpired that this was an exceptionally rare die dating from the late 6th or early 7th century. It bears a resemblance to the decorative elements of the famous Sutton Hoo helmet. It is the first of its kind to be found in England.

Czech tourists have discovered a 3,400-year-old Bronze Age treasure in Slovakia

Mr and Mrs Jans were walking towards the Tomášovský výhled viewpoint in the Slovak Paradise when they spotted a bronze object on a country lane that had been left exposed by a storm. Realising it might be a historical artefact, they contacted archaeologists. The archaeologists eventually uncovered 12 bronze objects dating from around 1 400 BC.

He was just about to cast his lines when he spotted a 1,000-year-old sword

Fisherman Mirosław Tucholski arrived at his usual spot by the River Warta, not far from the Polish town of Wronki. He had just started setting up his tackle when he spotted a long iron object amongst the stones and sand. It turned out to be an 11th-century sword.

Metal detector find of Roman artefacts: a gold ring, a hoard of coins and a lead coffin

A rare Roman gold ring has been unveiled in Somerset, England, and has now been declared a treasure. In 2018, Kevin Minto found it using a metal detector near Ilminster, where, a year earlier, he had discovered 250 Roman coins and a grave containing a lead coffin.

A treasure trove from a burial ground in Cairo: jewellery, amulets and other artefacts from ancient Heliopolis

Egyptian archaeologists have announced a significant discovery in the Matariya district of Cairo. At the burial site near Panehsy’s tomb, they found a collection of gold jewellery, cosmetic vessels, amulets and many other artefacts associated with funeral rites. This is the first almost complete burial set of its kind ever discovered in the region.
