3,000-year-old goldsmith's anvil in a Bronze Age treasure

An extremely rare Bronze Age anvil has been discovered in a field in Urchfont, Wiltshire, using metal detectors. It is part of a hoard of several copper alloy objects and ingots deposited between 1650 and 900 BC.

Detector discovery of an Iron Age bronze ritual spoon

A ritual bronze spoon, over 2,000 years old, has been discovered near the town of Patrick on the west coast of the Isle of Man. It was probably used in divination rituals. Only 27 similar examples are known in the world, this is the first from the Isle of Man. It was given to the finder without payment.

The lead coffin hid a 1,600-year-old cloak woven with gold

In 2020, a necropolis from the 2nd and 3rd centuries was discovered in Autun, France. The excavation uncovered more than 230 graves with a wealth of equipment, including a Roman diatreme vase - the only one known in France. One of the tombs contained a 4th-century lead coffin with the remains of a purple-coloured cloak interwoven with gold.

After almost 2,000 years, scientists can examine a charcoal-burned papyrus scroll from ancient Herculaneum. It was destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D. The scroll is too fragile to ever be physically unwrapped. Thanks to artificial intelligence and super-sensitive X-ray imaging, it was possible to digitally "unroll" the scroll and read the first words and sentences.

Detector find: a world-unique miniature gold Roman castle

A German detectorist discovered a tiny gold lock with delicate decorations. Measuring 12 x 11 mm, it resembles a small piece of jewellery, yet is fully functional. It dates back to the 3rd or 4th century AD. It is absolutely unique in Europe, and no other example of its kind has ever been discovered.

Near Bunnik, in the Dutch province of Utrecht, two amateur archaeologists with metal detectors have discovered a hoard of Roman and British coins from the 1st century. The hoard contains Celtic staters and Roman aurei. In the context of European archaeological finds, this is the largest such collection.
