A 1,200-year-old hoard of Islamic silver coins on the Baltic coast

During an excavation of an early medieval settlement in the Gulf of Visel, a collection of silver coins dating from the turn of the 8th and 9th centuries was discovered. They originate from various parts of the Islamic world, ranging from Mesopotamia to the region of present-day Afghanistan. Some of the coins were minted thousands of kilometres away from where they were found.

A 3,000-year-old treasure was stolen from the museum. The thieves made off with almost 10 kg of gold

One of the most significant Bronze Age gold hoards in Europe was stolen on Thursday. Gold worth 41 million crowns disappeared from a museum in Villena, Spain. The perpetrators apparently distracted the police with a false alarm in another part of the town so that they could carry out the theft ‘undisturbed’.

Archaeologists in Turkey have uncovered a grave containing unusual grave goods. The silver coins depicting a pair of wrestlers attracted the most attention. Some believe that the person buried there was an athlete, quite possibly a professional wrestler.

A unique artefact from the Late Roman period has been discovered near Cheltenham in England: a small nail-cleaning tool which was also intended to protect the wearer from misfortune and evil forces. Its handle, shaped like a finely detailed male genitalia, is without parallel.
