2,000 years ago, it probably formed the head of the iconic Corinthian column. For many centuries it was preserved by the Romans as a valuable relic. In the Anglo-Saxon period, a hitherto unknown bishop had the head turned into a goblet and decorated with gold. 1,100 years ago, it was placed in the ground along with hundreds of gold and silver objects from all over the then known world. In 2014, it was discovered in Britain's largest Viking hoard by Derek McLennan with the help of a metal detector.
