Study reveals Europe's oldest woven baskets and sandals

Mesolithic baskets woven from grass were discovered in a deep cave in southwestern Spain more than a century ago. Thanks to the stable conditions of the cave, the baskets have been preserved in their original state, practically looking as if they were made only yesterday. They have now been found to be 9,500 years old; making them the oldest surviving baskets in Europe.

Hundreds of millions of gold coins were seized in a raid on traffickers

Police raid on an organised group of smugglers and antique dealers in the Paleo Faliro area of Atébrought back one of the rarest and most valuable gold coins in numismatic history: The gold statere Pantikapaion of the 4th. The golden antique of the Phaetonian Phaeton, a golden statue from the fourth century BC, worth nearly half a hundred million crowns.

A breathtaking Anglo-Saxon brooch from the early formation of England

In October 2020, a unique early medieval brooch from the time of King Alfred the Great was discovered in a field near Cheddar using a metal detector. It is the first brooch of its kind to be discovered in south-west England. It has now been restored and put on free public display near the site of its discovery.

In a sunken ancient city, they found a temple with treasure

In the city of Thonis-Herakleion in the Abukir Bay near Alexandria, about 10 metres below sea level and 2.5 km from the coast, the remains of two temples were discovered - one dedicated to the Egyptian god Amon and the other to the Greek goddess Aphrodite. In the ruins of the Temple of Amon, gold and silver treasures from the time of the pharaohs were recently discovered.

Five golden, paper-thin Merovingian square plates the size of a fingernail were discovered in Vingrom near Lillehammer, Norway. They show detailed figures of women and men in elegant dress. Dating from between 550 and 793, their discovery is leading experts to new insights into their purpose.
