The ring, dating from the 9th to 11th centuries, was discovered by archaeologist Linda Åsheim of the Norwegian Institute for Cultural Heritage Research (NIKU) using a metal detector while supervising a drainage excavation in the historic core of Tønsberg, Norway. It lay at a depth of only 7 cm and was completely intact, in its original context. The discovery is exceptional in the Norwegian context.

Schoolboy Lucas Cunliffe from Newton Aycliffe in County Durham has discovered the unique decorated hilt end of a medieval sword using a metal detector . It bears a devotional inscription, crosses and other engravings. Experts have tentatively dated it to the 13th century. It is an extremely rare find - there are only six other similar examples in the whole of Britain.
