7 April 1944 Escape of Vrba and Wetzler from Auschwitz

During the Second World War they were sent to Auschwitz, where they stayed for about two years. Rudolf Vrba and Alfred Wetzler managed to escape from the concentration camp on 7 April 1944. They gave testimony about the atrocities the Nazis committed against the Jews. This information was leaked to the BBC and the New York Times.

6.4. 1250 Crusade: the king fell into captivity

The Seventh Crusade lasted six years (1248 to 1254). A major turning point occurred on April 6, 1250, when the French king Louis IX fell with his army into Saracen captivity. He had to surrender the conquered city of Dimyat on the Mediterranean coast.

5 April 1914 Sergeant Arnošt Hrad was born

He rejected the Munich Agreement and did not want to leave the fortress at the Polish border. Arnošt Hrad committed suicide as a twenty-four-year-old youth, before writing three suicide notes. He was born on April 5, 1914.

On the night of June 14, 1838, a boiler on the steam excursion boat Pulaski exploded off the coast of North Carolina. 4.4. 1969 Evžen Plocek burnt himself

After Jan Palach and Jan Zajic, he was torch No. 3, but he was different from the previous two. He was not in his student years, and even belonged to the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia. Evžen Plocek burned himself to death on 4 April 1969 in Jihlava at the Plague Column.

3. 4. 1977 Wilhelm Friedrich Boger died

He was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder in the Auschwitz concentration camp. Wilhelm Friedrich Boger also died in prison on 3 April 1977. However, he managed to evade justice for many years.

2.4 1355 Charles IV's journey to Rome

He promised not to stay in Rome for more than a day. Nevertheless, the coronation of Charles IV as Roman Emperor was spectacular. He appeared at the gates of the city on April 2, 1355.

1.4. 1945 Battle of Okinawa begins

The fighting was so brutal that many soldiers had mental breakdowns. The Japanese committed suicide in large numbers because they didn't want to be captured by the Americans. The Battle of Okinawa lasted over three months, beginning on April 1, 1945.

31.3. 1967 General Rodion Yakovlevich Malinovsky died

Soldiers under his command liberated Brno and other parts of South Moravia at the end of the Second World War. General Rodion Yakovlevich Malinovsky wanted to join the army as a young boy. He even became Minister of Defence. He held this post until his death on 31 March 1967.

30.3. 1968 President Ludvík Svoboda

He was attracted to the war since childhood, growing up in a peasant family. During the First World War he took part in the battles at Zborov or Bachmač, and during the Second World War at Sokolov. Ludvík Svoboda became President of Czechoslovakia on 30 March 1968.
