It represented the first major conflict between the Habsburgs and the Ottoman Empire. Prince Eugene of Savoy won. He was helped by artillery support from the Petrovaradin fortress, but also by a timely counterattack by the cavalry.

A young archaeologist has discovered the largest Bronze Age assemblage yet found in what is now London. Harry Platt's find from the autumn before last represents a total of 453 artefacts, dating from 800 to 900 BC and is the third largest of its kind ever discovered in the UK overall.

On the hot afternoon of 4 August 1306, a vicious murderer stabbed King Wenceslas III three times while he was staying in the house of the Olomouc dean Budislav. To this day it is still unknown who carried out the deed and for what reason.
