Home at last

In honour of the return of the Czechoslovak Legionnaires to their homeland, an extraordinary commemorative ride on a historic steam train will take place this November. The event "Finally Home - The Story of Our Legionnaires" will commemorate the 105th anniversary of their return and the courage of all war veterans. The train headed by the locomotive 555.0153 will travel the route from České Budějovice to Prague, accompanied by legionnaires in period uniforms.

Luxury sabre of an Avar warrior

At the end of August and the beginning of September, Hungarian archaeologists from the Szent István Király Museum discovered a special grave of an Avar warrior. It dates back to the period between 670 and 690 AD and the remains there were deliberately damaged. The equipment corresponded to a high-ranking individual. The curved Avar sabre is one of the rarest examples ever discovered.

Farmers plowed up a treasure trove of silver coins

A coin depot from the 17th century was recently discovered in eastern Poland. It was found by Romuald and Beata Jóźwiak while they were working in the fields in the village of Bukowiec Wielki. Archaeologists called to the site confirmed hundreds of silver coins and other objects.

A unique chisel with a preserved wooden handle from the Bronze Age was discovered during archaeological excavations in the Pertosa-Auletta caves in southern Italy. Along with thousands of other artefacts, a 4,000-year-old wooden pole dwelling or structure from the Hellenistic period.
