Naval Expedition Monoxylon IV.

On June 19, 2023, a new, fourth Monoxylon event began, i.e. the maritime expedition of doc. PhDr. Radomír Tichý, Ph.D. from the University of Hradec Králové, founder of the archaeopark in Všestary. The aim was to experimentally navigate the maritime migration route from the Middle East to Europe, through which agriculture could have spread to us 9,000 years ago. The purpose of these expeditions is to practically verify the different technologies of monoxyl production and their properties during maritime navigation. In the form of an archaeological experiment, they test monoxyl as a type of vessel that may have been used in the spread of early agricultural populations in the Mediterranean 9,000 years ago.

Detectorists in collaboration with archaeologists have discovered more medieval silver coins from an ancient hoard

A set of almost 1,000-year-old coins was found on the site of a former medieval fortress in the village of Wiślica in southern Poland. The discovery was made as part of an ongoing revitalisation programme, which includes archaeological work following 60 years of research. The experts worked with the local detectorist association; their work is highly regarded.

A gold necklace discovered in a field

A prospector with a metal detector discovered part of a gold necklace near Mistley (a village and civil parish in the Tendring district of north-east Essex). According to experts, it is around 3,000 years old and is very rare. The jewel has been declared a treasure.

Detective finds gold ring; could belong to Sheriff of Nottingham

Andy Taylor of Lincoln found the 460-year-old ring three years ago during a club event in a field at Rushcliff, about 40 miles from Sherwood Forest. In the 16th century, rings like this were a popular symbol, used to convey secret messages and declarations of love between the giver and the recipient. Given the circumstances of the find, some experts believe it may have been part of the hoard of the Sheriff of Nottingham or a member of his family.

Ötzi the Ice Man - he looked different and came from somewhere else. A new study disproves previous ideas

Ötzi's well-preserved body from the Copper Age between 3350 and 3120 BC was discovered by hikers in the Alps near the Austrian-Italian border in 1991. In 2012, the first DNA analysis found genetic traits of steppe herders from Eastern Europe in the mummy's ancestors. But the latest high-quality genetic analysis of DNA sequencing refutes the previous results. Ötzi was much closer to early Anatolian farmers. The study also provides completely different information about Ötzi's appearance.

The July winner was quite clear and my tip that there would be at least 3 equal opponents proved to be wrong. 🙂 In August, since the "tin cavalry" is done, there are even more beautiful finds and choosing the TOP 5 is basically a superhuman task. So I hope you all will somehow manage it.

Archaeologists in Worcestershire have invited the public to explore their gardens with experts to uncover the history of their own backyards. The result was nearly 20,000 artefacts found, 400 people involved, 96 yards explored, lots of answers, even more questions and ultimately a national competition win.
