Metal detector finds Britain's largest Iron Age treasure; now on display

An exhibition has opened at the Yorkshire Museum which, for the first time ever, introduces the public to one of the most significant archaeological discoveries of recent decades in Britain. The treasure was discovered in December 2021 by metal detectorist prospectorist Peter Heads near the village of Melsonby in North Yorkshire. The assemblage contains over 800 Iron Age objects. The value exceeds 7.3 million crowns.

An axe with handles is a rare and technologically advanced type of iron tool and weapon. It dates from the older Iron Age, i.e. from the so-called Hallstatt period (approximately 750-500 years BC).
