11 May 1859 Archduke John of Habsburg-Lorraine died

He was one of the most popular members of the Habsburg family, the youngest brother of Emperor Francis I. He also intervened in the Napoleonic Wars. The Austrian archduke and military leader John of Habsburg-Lorraine died on 11 May 1859 at the age of 77.

Treasures from a teacher's collection auctioned for a million

History teacher Gordon Taylor has always enjoyed walking through the fields, looking for fragments of artefacts and traces of ancient human activity. In 1962, he found a fragment of human bone near Irby in Lincolnshire. This discovery led to a 17-year-long exploration and the discovery of 72 mostly female graves and hundreds of unique objects dating from between 450 and 625 AD.

The main goal of Hitler's westward campaign was to win France, on whose side many soldiers from the former Czechoslovakia and Poland fought. However, Germany was successful and took other countries as well. It launched its long-awaited offensive on 10 May 1940.

9 May 1915 Battle of Arras Czechoslovak Legionnaires

By their courage, the Czech legionaries at the Battle of Arras also drew other soldiers to the attack. However, due to heavy casualties, the Nazdar Company practically ceased to exist. To this day, however, a monument commemorates it in France. The fighting began at 10 a.m. on May 9, 1915.

8 May 1394 The nobles imprisoned King Wenceslas IV.

The enemies of Wenceslas IV captured the king twice. The first time was in May 1394, when he was taken to Wildberg Castle near Linz. The feuding parties eventually struck a deal. The second time they imprisoned the monarch was in Vienna in 1402.

6 May 1757 Battle of Sterbohol

The Battle of Sterbohol was the second largest engagement of the Seven Years' War. It saw the Prussian army of Frederick II and the Habsburg army led by Prince Charles of Lorraine. It took place on 6 May 1757.

5 May 1705 King Leopold I of Bohemia died.

Leopold I belonged to the Habsburg family, which was obvious at first sight. He had a typically large, overhanging lower lip. His nearly half-century reign was largely filled with wars. He died on 5 May 1705.

4 May 1919 Milan Rastislav Štefánik died tragically

He was an astronomer, doctor of philosophy, politician and co-founder of Czechoslovakia. During the First World War he organized the Czechoslovak Legions in Serbia. Milan Rastislav Štefánik died after a plane crash on May 4, 1919.
