Huge Roman mosaic saved from being sold off by Islamic State militants

A mosaic from the Roman period with scenes from the Trojan War was discovered in Al-Rastan, Syria. Dating from the 4th century, the 20 x 6 m area uncovered is not complete, according to archaeologists - the mosaic seems to continue under neighbouring plots. It is the most significant archaeological discovery in Syria since the conflict began 11 years ago.

500-year-old pendant found by metal detector declared a treasure

The circular reliquary pendant was found in May near Stroud in Gloucestershire by detectorist David Mallows of the Wyvern History and Detection Club in Harescombe. At an inquest in Gloucester last Thursday, the coroner was told it dated between 1400 and 1540, contained precious metals and met the requirements of a treasure.

More than 260 coins were discovered by a couple in 2019 while renovating the kitchen of an old house in Ellerby, East Yorkshire. They were lying in a container between a concrete slab and 18th-century floorboards. A preliminary estimate of their price was around £200,000. However, international attention grew after the story was published, raising the original estimate many times over.

5/28/1936 Landowner found a pot full of pennies

A pot full of coins was discovered by a farm owner in the Silesian village of Bolatice in 1936. He came across the depot when he wanted to plant a tree. The ceramic pot contained coins dating from 1635 to 1645. The story goes that the landowner buried part of the treasure in the same place where he found it. Exactly where, however, is still unknown...
