From an ordinary ‘button’ to a unique coin of the last Viking king

Metal detectorist Morten Eek discovered a small object near a Norwegian monastery, which he initially took to be an ordinary button. It was only after several weeks that his friends noticed a detail that completely changed the significance of the find. The supposed button is in fact only the fifth coin of its kind and the only one ever found in Norway.

Archaeologists have unveiled finds from a large Celtic settlement in Allonnes, France. In addition to hundreds of coins, weapons and craft tools, they also discovered at least five iron shackles linked to the slave trade.

A bronze hoard from the Late Bronze Age, dating from around 950–800 BC, was discovered near Dereham in Norfolk at the turn of 2019 and 2020.  The hoard includes three very rare lead ingots deliberately shaped into rectangular discs.

For the first time since 1999, a total solar eclipse will be visible on the European continent, attracting hundreds of thousands of observers from all over the world. Whilst residents of northern Spain, Iceland and Greenland will be able to admire several tens of seconds of total darkness and the magnificent solar corona, most of Europe, including the Czech Republic, will experience a very pronounced partial eclipse.

3,800-year-old ritual figurines discovered in Peru

Archaeologists in Peñico, Peru, have discovered a collection of 43 figurines made of wood and bone. They depict human figures, animals, mythological creatures and geometric motifs. Just under 4,000 years ago, they were buried as a ritual offering during the construction of a new section of the main public building.
