In the French village of Senon, an extraordinary hoard of more than 40,000 Roman coins was discovered during archaeological research prior to the construction of a house, stored in three ceramic vessels under the floors of the former houses. The find, dating back to the end of the 3rd century AD, is interesting not only in its extent but also in its interpretation. According to archaeologists, it was not a classic hidden treasure, but rather a system of successive storage and collection of money within the household.

2,000 years ago, it probably formed the head of the iconic Corinthian column. For many centuries it was preserved by the Romans as a valuable relic. In the Anglo-Saxon period, a hitherto unknown bishop had the head turned into a goblet and decorated with gold. 1,100 years ago, it was placed in the ground along with hundreds of gold and silver objects from all over the then known world. In 2014, it was discovered in Britain's largest Viking hoard by Derek McLennan with the help of a metal detector.
