Plate-solving
Plate-solving is the automatic identification of a place in the sky from a photograph of the stars. It is "star recognition by image". It is used in smart telescopes (Seestar, Unistellar, Vaonis) and in astrophotography for precise pointing and tracking of objects.
🔭 How it works step by step

The telescope takes a short photo of the sky.
- usually 0.5-2 seconds, just the stars. -
The software finds the positions of the stars in the image.
- doesn't recognize the shapes of the objects, just the distribution of the dots. -
The relative angles between stars are checked against a star catalogue database (e.g. Gaia, Hipparcos).
- does not look for individual stars, but for patterns (pattern matching). -
The system finds an exact match.
- obtains RA/DEC coordinates (rectangular/declination). -
The telescope calculates where it is pointing.
- automatically corrects the pointing error.
