The Czech landscape is a fascinating open-air archive, where every field or forest ravine can be a potential place where time has stood still. As searchers, however, we must remember that these finds are not just "things" but mute witnesses to human destinies. Being a successful searcher in historic areas requires much more than high tech - it requires knowledge of history, legislation, and above all, humility towards the monuments.

The economic background not only of medieval settlements

Many searchers focus on settlements that are still functioning or have disappeared. Several basic rules need to be taken into account. Searching directly on such sites is impossible without the cooperation of archaeologists. The vast majority of such sites are protected by the Preservation Act.

The removal of an object at such sites is not just about the find itself, but about the condition of the object and the overall context of the circumstances. Thus, from this perspective, it is always best to search on so-called mobile soils (fields, intensively farmed forests) where the searcher not only does not damage the finding circumstances, but often the object is salvaged (given the size and power of today's agricultural machinery).

Where to look: focus on ploughed fields, in the case of historically interesting finds, pinpoint the location using at least a mobile phone and note down basic data (time, depth of find, soil condition). Such finds are then subject to notification. By law, archaeological finds belong to counties, so it is not easy to visit a city or county museum.

Relics of drill and shadows of wars

There are a number of searchers for whom the search for war artefacts, especially those from the Second World War, is very popular. In particular, the so-called World War II collection camps are constantly frequented. In such places the searcher should behave as politely as possible and the places you have visited should look at least the same when you leave as when you arrived.

The other similar category is training areas, especially after the German army. However, there is always a risk of finding unexploded ordnance in such places. If this happens, you should not handle the find any further and call the police or, better still, the police pyrotechnics service. The bomb squad, if you do the right thing, will thank you.

Battlefields are in a category by themselves, and this is from the many conflicts that have passed through our country. Most of them are places of remembrance and searchers without archaeologists have no business being there.
