This year will again be rich in archaeological discoveries for Italy.Anewly preserved Roman mosaic in the province of Verona was unearthed in May, the second major find.

Photos of the old Roman mosaic, which is relatively well preserved, have been published by Italian archaeologists and surveyors. It is located in the province of Verona. It was part of an old Roman villa, the remains of which archaeologists first found more than a century ago. This is according to the surviving records. In recent years, surveyors have been trying to trace the foundations of the old Roman house. And they've just come across a beautiful mosaic, images of which are already circulating on the internet.

So far, only a small part of the mosaic has been uncovered. It will take a lot of resources and effort to uncover the whole thing. Even so, the discovery of the old mosaic is likely to be one of the most important archaeological finds in Italy this year.

The villa is located near vineyards, with whose owners experts remain in contact. Together with representatives of the local government, they are looking for ways to make the jewel accessible to the public. The new discovery has caused excitement on social media. Historian Myko Clelland posted the news of the mosaic on Twitter. "It's very rare to find such an old thing in such good condition," he rejoices.

The mosaic was discovered by experts from Soprintendenza di Verona, a company that seeks to excavate the remains of ancient history in the province of Verona. "It's not easy to find such things. Nature, of course, plays a role, as it can cover things with mud and leaves. But it could also be the fault of people who tend to build on the same sites where there are remains of very old buildings that may remain buried for ages," Clelland pointed out.

The imperial "road"

Although the coronavirus pandemic has paralysed Italy, this year also looks set to be rich in archaeological discoveries. For in addition to mosaics, an imperial road was also discovered in May near the famous Pantheon in Rome. It was located under the paving stones. Part of the famous old road was first found in Rome in the 1990s.

Rome continues to "uncover" new aspects of its rich history. Earlier this year, for example, a tomb dedicated to Romulus, the legendary founder of the city, was also discovered during excavations near the famous Forum Romanum. "The discovery of the room with the sarcophagus is a truly exceptional find. The Forum never ceases to surprise us," Alfonsina Russo, director of the archaeological site, told The Times.
