He was digging in his garden and found the largest Viking hoard in Denmark

A homeowner in Rebild, Denmark, was digging up the ground in preparation for building a terrace when he stumbled upon a huge treasure from the Viking Age. Silver coins, brooches, bracelets, chains, ingots and chopped-up silver weighing 18.5 kg. In terms of scale, it surpassed all previously known Viking silver hoards in the country. 

A metal detectorist has found a unique button dating back 3,000 years

At first glance, this unassuming bronze object, 24 millimetres in diameter, is an exceptionally rare find. It is a button from the Late Bronze Age. Only 19 similar examples are known to exist across the whole of Britain. It was discovered alongside a small bronze axe near Barton Turf in England.

Metal detectorists have discovered a hoard of Roman denarii and Dacian bracelets

On 26 July, metal detectorist Ioji Ștefan Cătălin, known by the nickname ‘The Treasure Hunter’, discovered a unique collection of Roman silver coins and Dacian jewellery near the Romanian village of Apostolache. Together with other members of his metal-detecting club, he duly handed the find over to the authorities and can look forward to a substantial financial reward.

A 1,200-year-old hoard of Islamic silver coins on the Baltic coast

During an excavation of an early medieval settlement in the Gulf of Visel, a collection of silver coins dating from the turn of the 8th and 9th centuries was discovered. They originate from various parts of the Islamic world, ranging from Mesopotamia to the region of present-day Afghanistan. Whilst renovating a house in Dendermonde, Belgium, workers stumbled upon a huge hoard of gold. In the cellar, they discovered gold coins and ingots worth around 9 million euros. The treasure was first spotted by an 18-year-old temporary worker, who initially thought they were ordinary one-euro coins – until gold bars began to fall from the excavation site.
