The grave of a wealthy warrior: a sword, a spear and unusual rings on his feet

Almost two thousand years ago, the body of a young man was laid to rest in a stone grave. A sword was placed across his chest, and a spear lay beside his body. He was wearing personal jewellery and two bronze rings on his toes. It is the richest Iron Age grave yet discovered in Scotland.

A seemingly ordinary bronze plaque found using a metal detector is rewriting history

Stephen Newbury discovered a small rectangular plate made of a copper alloy whilst using a metal detector near the village of Lynsted in Kent. It later transpired that this was an exceptionally rare die dating from the late 6th or early 7th century. It bears a resemblance to the decorative elements of the famous Sutton Hoo helmet. It is the first of its kind to be found in England.

Czech tourists have discovered a 3,400-year-old Bronze Age treasure in Slovakia

Mr and Mrs Jans were walking towards the Tomášovský výhled viewpoint in the Slovak Paradise when they spotted a bronze object on a country lane that had been left exposed by a storm. Realising it might be a historical artefact, they contacted archaeologists. The archaeologists eventually uncovered 12 bronze objects dating from around 1 400 BC.

He was just about to cast his lines when he spotted a 1,000-year-old sword

Fisherman Mirosław Tucholski arrived at his usual spot by the River Warta, not far from the Polish town of Wronki. He had just started setting up his tackle when he spotted a long iron object amongst the stones and sand. It turned out to be an 11th-century sword.

A treasure trove from a burial ground in Cairo: jewellery, amulets and other artefacts from ancient Heliopolis

Egyptian archaeologists have announced a significant discovery in the Matariya district of Cairo. At the burial site near Panehsy’s tomb, they found a collection of gold jewellery, cosmetic vessels, amulets and many other artefacts associated with funeral rites. This is the first almost complete burial set of its kind ever discovered in the region.

Three Bronze Age gold bracelets have been discovered in a field near Blackford in the north of England. They were found by two metal detectorists at the site of a planned power substation as part of a group search organised in protest against its construction. Archaeologists describe the find as truly extraordinary.

An extraordinary set of massive gold neckpieces weighing 300 grams was found in Romania. Along with them were discovered 2 bronze axes, a bronze bracelet and a trio of miniature bicycles with bird decoration. The discovery changes the view of dating artefacts from between the Bronze and Iron Ages.

Detectives find Roman hoard of silver coins

Two prospectors with metal detectors have discovered a ploughed-up depot of hundreds of Roman coins in a field near South Brent. The earliest coins date from the beginning of the century. They are among the largest known finds of Roman coinage from Devon. The coins have now been declared a treasure trove.

Members of the Detectorist Society discover a rare hoard of 9th century coins

A group of prospectors with metal detectors have discovered a rare set of early medieval Anglo-Saxon coins in Worcestershire, England. The treasure was hidden during the Viking invasions between 871 and 874 AD. It contains silver coins, one gold coin and also rare Frankish coins.

Six-year-old boy finds 1,300-year-old sword on school trip

First grade pupils from Fredheim School in Brandb, Norway, had a trip they will never forget. During a spring walk, Henrik Refsnes Mørtvedt noticed a strange piece of rusty metal sticking out of the ground. He thought it was old scrap metal or part of a tool, but curiosity won out. It was a medieval sword.
