Israeli archaeologists discover golden Byzantine treasure in early Christian monastery

In the ruins of a Christian monastery in the Judean Desert, a golden treasure dating back to the first half of the 7th century was discovered. The former Christian monastery was located about 17 km east of Jerusalem in the West Bank. It disappeared in the 8th century, guarding the treasure continuously for 1,400 years.

"Mysterious" medieval seal with Roman intaglio worth millions

A prospector with a metal detector discovered a rare medieval seal in a field, the central part of which is a 2,000-year-old Roman engraved stone. The artefact with the mysterious inscription represents a combination of two time horizons at least 1,200 years apart.

Among the most interesting are a Japanese sword from the 17th century and a newly discovered set of silver denarii from the second half of the 13th century.

Two Celtic gold coins were found near the Swiss village of Arisdorf on the Bärenfels hill. They date from the 3rd century BC and are the oldest coins in what is now Switzerland. Their discovery was preceded by the two-year-old discovery of a hoard of silver coins dating back to the 1st century BC.

Two detectorists have discovered a depot of luxury Anglo-Saxon jewellery from the 7th century in Lincolnshire, England. The set consists of four different gold pendants and a fragment of a richly decorated brooch with garnets. According to archaeologists, it is neither a commonly stored treasure nor standard grave goods - circumstances suggest a possible connection to a ritual "killing".

Metal detector searcher discovers unique 9th century Viking grave

A very interesting find was made by Roy Søreng when he was searching with a metal detector near Bjugn in Trøndelag county, Norway. First he unearthed a beautiful early medieval oval brooch. Then he noticed human bones. He immediately stopped digging and contacted the archaeologists. On the spot, they discovered that it was a female grave unlike any other in Scandinavia.

An amazing discovery from the beginning of World War II: a two-kilogram warhead of a regimental artillery battalion

A rare artefact has been discovered in the forest area of Starachowice, reliving the dramatic moments of the Polish defence in September 1939. Searchers with metal detectors from the "Grupa Ochrony Zabytków Fort" discovered a silver head of a regimental battalion in the shape of an eagle with a battalion belt and fragments of cloth. The objects had remained hidden for nearly 86 years; from the moment when members of the 12th Light Artillery Regiment hid them to prevent them from falling into enemy hands.

The last day of the excavation yielded a magnificent gold Roman ring

Archaeologists from the Regional History Museum in Vidin, Bulgaria, discovered a gold wedding ring from the 2nd to 3rd century during their excavation of the Roman fortress of Bononia. It represents one of the finest pieces of jewellery from the late Roman period discovered in north-western Bulgaria.
