Detective discovers gold funeral ring; declared treasure

The well-preserved gold ring was discovered in a field near Walton-on-Trent using a metal detector by Mr John Startin-Taylor in 2021. He reported the find through PAS and it was officially classified as treasure by the coroner on Thursday 5 January. It is a mourning ring of the kind given to survivors. It dates from the late 17th century and belonged to a prominent sheriff and nobleman, a member of Parliament.

Jewish treasure from the beginning of the Nazi invasion of Poland found in Lodz

During the renovation of an old tenement house in Lodz, Poland, a collection of more than 400 valuable objects of Jewish families hidden in fear of the Nazi occupation was discovered. The collection includes kiddush cups, Hanukkah cups, menorahs, sacred artifacts and fragments of the Talmud, as well as items of daily and household furnishings, including silver-plated crockery, glass perfume bottles and clothing. Everything was wrapped in Polish, Yiddish and German newspapers from October 1939.

The largest French hoard of Roman coins

A hoard of four thousand Roman coins from a sunken 2nd century merchant ship has been exhibited for the first time as a whole at the Museum of Aquitaine in Bordeux. The collection lay at the bottom of the Garonne River. 1500 kg of bronze coins half a metre underground

A huge hoard of 1.5-ton bronze coins from the Tang (618-907) and Song (960-1279) dynasties was discovered in the eastern Chinese village of Shuangdun in Jiangsu province. The coins were connected by straw strings and arranged in neat rows.

Avatar of Egtvedpigen, or: the Bronze Age Girl Speaks

In 1921, the grave of a young Bronze Age woman was discovered near the village of Egtved in southeast Denmark. It was found when a farmer dug through her coffin with a shovel while digging a burial mound. The coffin with the remains was later stored in a museum and now, using the latest 3D virtualisation techniques, has been 'brought to life' to bring the past as close as possible to the visitors it speaks to, waves to and greets.
