In 2020, a necropolis from the 2nd and 3rd centuries was discovered in Autun, France. The excavation uncovered more than 230 graves with a wealth of equipment, including a Roman diatreme vase - the only one known in France. One of the tombs contained a 4th-century lead coffin with the remains of a purple-coloured cloak interwoven with gold.

The first words of Vesuvius' burnt ancient scroll from Herculaneum

After almost 2,000 years, scientists can examine a charcoal-burned papyrus scroll from ancient Herculaneum. It was destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D. The scroll is too fragile to ever be physically unwrapped. Thanks to artificial intelligence and super-sensitive X-ray imaging, it was possible to digitally "unroll" the scroll and read the first words and sentences.

Detector find: a world-unique miniature gold Roman castle

A German detectorist discovered a tiny gold lock with delicate decorations. Measuring 12 x 11 mm, it resembles a small piece of jewellery, yet is fully functional. A rare treasure of silver coins from the 11th century

Nearly 1,000-year-old silver coins in excellent condition have been discovered during excavations at the site of a future nuclear power station in England. They were found by a team of archaeologists from Oxford Cotswold Archaeology. They were wrapped in a tight package made up of strips of cloth and lead.
