Swedish charity funds save unique Viking treasure

A unique 1,000-year-old Viking treasure trove of European coins and artefacts, including Bavarian and Slavic ones, was almost sold off at private auctions. It was eventually saved by two charitable foundations. It will now be put on public display.

Dog in Poland unearths unique depot of medieval coins

Near the town of Wałbrzych in south-western Poland, a dog found a large set of thin, single-sided medieval coins from the 13th century - well-preserved bractes. According to experts, this is the first such find in the last 100 years.

Cooperating detectorist finds rare hoard of Roman coins from Constantine's reign

A hoard of more than 1,000 coins from the first half of the 4th century was found in Bubendorf in northern Switzerland. They were discovered by a detectorist - a volunteer collaborator of the local museum, Mr. Daniel Lüdin. The coins were lying in a ceramic pot at a shallow depth. The experts picked them up in situ so that they could examine them in laboratory conditions and obtain as much information as possible. Treasures from the 4th century are very rare.

Archaeologists uncover richly furnished tomb of 6th century girl

Stolen valuable Darwin notebooks were anonymously returned in a pink gift bag

A pink gift bag was recently found on the floor of a public area of Cambridge University Library. Inside was a custom-made archive box containing 2 notebooks protected by food-grade foil. Detectorist discovers unique gold necklace, heralds discovery of Iron Age settlement

At Ilsted in southern Denmark, a neckcloth dating from 400 - 550 AD was discovered with the help of a metal detector. It was found by an archaeological associate of the Museum of Southwest Jutland. He immediately contacted the archaeologists who, in cooperation with other detectorists, examined the entire field. They discovered a settlement with long Scandinavian houses from the late Iron Age.
