Almost 70 years after the war, Germany returned to Poland a rare painting that the Nazis stole for Hitler's museum. Specifically, it was a work by the Venetian painter Francesco Guardi, entitled "The Palace Staircase". But the search is still on for thousands of works of art that have disappeared to parts unknown.

Nine years ago, two guns belonging to notorious gangsters Bonnie and Clyde were for sale for half a million dollars. They were carrying the guns when they were shot by police in 1934. Bonnie had a revolver attached with a patch on his inner thigh, Clyde behind his belt.

Archaeologists from the University of Leicester have discovered fittings from a 2,200-year-old chariot. Experts believe it was dismantled or never reassembled. It probably belonged to a nobleman or warrior.

Treasure hunter and fisherman Jason Hemmings (41) has discovered Roman coins believed to have been dropped by a soldier two thousand years ago. The Dorset man made the haul with a metal detector he bought from a friend for £300. In total he found fifteen bronze and silver coins.

The original of the beautiful gold brooch returned to a museum in Turkey nine years ago. It is part of the so-called Lydian Hoard, which contains 363 valuable artefacts. In the past, they were part of a dispute between Turkey and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

A jar of gold coins discovered at the end of World War II was sold at auction ten years ago. It was estimated to fetch up to £80,000. It was dug up in a garden in London and belonged to a family of Jewish refugees who hid the treasure from the Nazis.
