24.8. 1943 Battle of the Dnieper

The Battle of the Dnieper was a gigantic battle of the Great Patriotic War, which took place from 24 August 1943. The Soviet army formed five fronts that operated along the river in an area approximately 1,400 kilometers wide.

Papal seal in order of 1.5 millionth treasure

The number of reported archaeological finds in the UK recently reached the 1.5 million mark. This incredible number was achieved by the discovery of a 13th century papal seal.

The Battle of Tannenberg was a huge disaster for the Russians. The Russian 2nd Army lost 125,000 men, while the German losses were "only" 15,000. When Samsonov realized his defeat, he committed suicide.

22.8. 1471 Vladislav Jagellonsky crowned King of Bohemia

Vladislav Jagiellonian had to continue the war with Matthias Corvinus right from the beginning of his reign. When he became King of Hungary, he moved from Prague to Buda. He died at the age of sixty.

The occupation of Czechoslovakia by Warsaw Pact troops was the biggest shock to our country since the end of the Second World War. The invasion claimed the lives of 72 of our citizens.

20.8. 1940 Russian revolutionary Trotsky assassination victim

Already in 1929 Stalin got rid of his greatest opponent, Leon Trotsky, whom he forced to leave emigration. Later in 1940, Trotsky was assassinated in Mexico, an assassination orchestrated by Beria on Stalin's orders.

19.8. 1619 The rebellious Czech Estates deposed Ferdinand II.

The only ally willing to join his fate in 1619 with the Bohemian uprising was the twenty-three-year-old Calvinist Elector Frederick V. Falck. He succeeded Ferdinand II, who had been deposed by the rebellious Bohemian Estates.

František Josef had a military education, learned foreign languages and was brought up in the spirit of the Austrian Grand Seigneur. He was born at Laxenburg Castle near Vienna.

17.8. 1812 Battle of Smolensk

On August 15, 1812, the situation looked as if the enemy had indeed been stopped at Smolensk, forced into a decisive battle and destroyed. Over the next two days, 150,000 men of the Grand Army fought against 120,000 Russians.

16.8. 1419 King Wenceslas IV of Bohemia died.

What caused the death of Václav IV is still a mystery. Some say a stroke, others say a heart attack. Before the king died, he screamed in pain.
